Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from energy production in France dropped 15% in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2022, according to a new report.

The fall was mainly linked to a 2.6% rise in nuclear output and “lower” thermal production, said the report by climate NGO Citepa.

GHG emissions from the whole French energy sector, including refining, fell 8% between January and June, it added.

Meanwhile, France’s total GHG emissions fell 4.3% over the period. As well as in the energy sector, the biggest falls were from industry (10%) and buildings (7%), the report said.

Commenting on the figures, French energy minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher said that it showed the government’s ecology and energy strategy continued to “produce results.”

Last week, the government released a new climate plan based on the relaunch of the nuclear sector, an acceleration in the deployment of renewables, energy savings and efficiency measures.

France aims to cut GHG emissions by 55% below 1990 levels by 2030, in line with EU objectives.

Now is all about climate change, right? Climate change, and two of the three F words that we all know too well.
